Allow yourself to become or to remain isolated, and you will fail. Get the connections, and you will thrive.
For the rest of your life, as long as you want to work in the movies, with or without a degree, your success and your solvency will depend 100% on your ability to form relationships with people who will hire you and recommend you. Something to pay the bills while you network. Waiting tables, event staffing, temp agency, yada yada yada. is still the big time, but it's an extremely hostile environment for new talent). Move to a city where films are made (my suggestions are New Orleans, Atlanta, or New York L.A. Unless you're rich or connected, you're going to start out as a Set PA. In two years in the industry, I've worked on all kinds of shows: from feature films to music videos, to reality TV and never once have I been asked for education credentials. Besides which, if all you want to do is get on set, nobody really gives a fuck if you've been to school or not. It does give you connections, but only with your fellow students and your instructors not with the influential and affluent people you need to know in order to make your own films. It does not lend you credibility within the industry. A degree in Film does not allow you to skip ahead.

Now I'm $32,000 in debt (many people end up $100,000 or more in debt), half of my GI Bill is gone, and though I did technically learn things about the industry, and now work in it with a decent degree of success it rankles me to realize that I could have learned just as much, if not more, for free (or even for a profit).Įven reputable four-year film schools are a waste of time and money unless you're independently wealthy or have the connections and access to money to become a producer immediately upon graduation. It isn't worth the money.Īt the time, I loved it, because I was sucked into believing that I'd be set above others who hadn't been to film school and that Full Sail's model of hands-on, accelerated instruction was superior to other schools' theory-based approaches.
